Emergency Family Plan

Emergency Family Preparation Checklist (pdf)Download

PP+ Family Plan Checklist

Your Emergency Family Plan includes a list of topics to discuss with your family, emergency steps to follow, contact info, meeting locations and education. An emergency is no time to figure out what you should be doing. Make it a habit of reminding young children of your plans and protocols.

If you live in Kansas, you don't need to prepare for a hurricane, but you'd better be ready for tornadoes. While some disasters, such as fire, can happen anywhere, the hazards you might encounter vary widely from place to place. if you are not sure, check with your local emergency management or civil defense office, Red Cross chapter, or the National Weather Service to get an idea of what emergencies you should prepare for.

Things to Think About and Discuss

It’s a good idea to be on the same page with your family as to what you would do in case of an emergency. Review these concepts every few months as we all can be forgetful.

  • Meet with family members to discuss how to respond to the dangers of fire, severe weather, earthquakes, and other emergencies
  • Find safe spots in your home for each type of disaster
  • Discuss what to do about power outages and injuries
  • Draw a floor plan of your home and mark two escape routes from each room
  • Post emergency phone numbers near telephones
  • Teach children how and when to call 911, police, and fire
  • Teach family members to turn on and how to use a radio for information
  • Pick one out-of-state and one local contact person to call in case of a disaster
  • Teach children phone numbers
  • Pick two reunion locations one right outside of your home, and one away from your neighborhood in case you cannot return
  • Take a basic first aid and CPR class
  • Revise and review the plan often with your family regularly

  • Do you have a FOOD STORAGE to last at least 3 MONTHS for everyone in your family, including pets
  • Have you practiced cooking this food without electricity
